Field work reflection

Throughout this module I have learnt a lot about the city of Cardiff that I didn’t know before. Visiting and researching places such as St Fagans and Cardiff Docks was interesting, and it was this that lead me to look further into things around the city that people don’t necessarily know about. Exploring these places has also helped with my drawings and I have managed to get a good collection of photographs.

I have researched some really interesting artists, who all focus their work on decay and breaking down, such as Laura Edgar and Maggie Ayres. The stitch workshops were really helpful to me throughout as I wanted to focus mainly on layers and texture. I enjoyed the ‘Speed dating’ sessions and have created a range of different samples, which show an improvement in my fabric manipulation. I feel that my print samples aren’t as strong as stitch, but I was happy with my digital prints which developed really well. As my final piece I made a larger sized collage piece. I wanted to show the different techniques that I have used, and combine them together. As my main focus is on the layers and colour in decay, I spent a lot of time on the needle punch machine, mixing different scrap fabrics, and worked into them using the various feet on the machines, especially the fringe foot.

I found the group work really useful and inspiring, it was a good opportunity to learn some new stuff and do something that was different with new people. Our ideas linked together well and we came up with a strong project idea and completed it with no real problems. I was lucky with my group and I think we were successful. We all worked together well with no real problems, and I think we learnt a lot from each other.
